The Medieval Studies program was founded in to promote the interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages. By the late s, the program had grown to include an undergraduate element and was housed in the Center for Medieval Studies, which is now one of the university's most active and well-known centers of advanced study.
Minor Program in Medieval Studies. The undergraduate program in medieval studies offers an interdisciplinary minor that allows students to explore the history, philosophy, theology, and cultural production of the Middle Ages in an integrated and nuanced fashion, through engagement with a diverse array of textual and material artifacts.
Medieval studies provides an excellent general education or a solid base for graduate work in a more specialized area.

Many medieval studies programs established in the s and ’80s adopt multidisciplinary approaches. More recently, medieval studies, like the humanities overall, have faced declining support. Large amounts of primary source materials remain unfilmed or unscanned, making it necessary for scholars to travel to the archives where they are held.
Students interested in majoring in medieval studies must consult the program coordinator by Autumn Quarter of their third year. Twelve courses are required, including at least three courses basically historical in nature, three courses of linguistic character, and two courses in other disciplines (e.g., art, music, philosophy, theology).

Requirements include five courses from the following list: ART Studies in Medieval Art (3 hrs.) ENG Chaucer in Middle English (3 hrs.) HIS Studies in Pre-Modern History (3 hrs.)
